PHOTO: The woman who died following an engine failure aboard a Southwest flight was identified as New Mexico resident Jennifer Riordan.

Phillips and an emergency medical technician onboard laid the woman down and immediately began administering CPR, while the pilot urged everyone to brace for an emergency landing.

The pilot was forced to land the Boeing 737 at Philadelphia International Airport. The flight, which was en route to Texas' Dallas Love Field Airport, was carrying 144 passengers and five crew members at the time, officials said.

A woman died after a Southwest Airlines jet suffered engine failure and made an emergency landing on Tuesday, marking the first accidental fatality on a domestic flight in nine years, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
Flight 1380 was en route from New York City's LaGuardia International Airport to Dallas Love Field when the plane was forced to land at Philadelphia International Airport Tuesday morning.
Jennifer Riordan of New Mexico died after she was partially sucked out a window near the engine, according to witnesses. Officials did not immediately confirm that account.
"Jennifer Riordan has passed away as a result of previously reported events on Southwest Airlines flight No. 1380," her family said in a statement. "Jennifer’s vibrancy, passion and love infused our community and reached across our country. Her impact on everything and everyone she touched can never be fully measured.
"But foremost, she is the bedrock of our family. She and Mike wrote a love story unlike any other. Her beauty and love is evident through her children. We are so appreciative of the outpouring of support from family, friends and our community."
Riordan previously worked in marketing at the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center.
"Jennifer was an amazing community leader, team member, wife and mother," Dr. Paul Roth, chancellor for Health Sciences Center, said in a statement. "Her passion for our community, our students and our future was unwavering. We are committed to carrying on her work to ensure quality education and career opportunities to New Mexico’s youth. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family during this difficult time. She will be forever missed by her Lobo family."

Woman leaves party in shorts, freezes to death

When 21-year-old Elizabeth Luebke traveled an hour and a half south from her home in Oshkosh, Wis., to Milwaukee for a concert, she wound up at an after-party wearing a tank top, shorts, and fish-net stockings — and at around 4:30 a.m. left angrily after arguing with a friend, reports Fox6now.com. It was -5.8 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind chill was a frigid -27.5 degrees.

Security video footage from a nearby business shows her suddenly collapsing in front of a house and eventually stopping moving altogether, reports BuzzFeed. Her body was found by a passerby at 9 a.m., just around the corner from the party.

Luebke, who also went by the name Lana Kane, had frozen to death, but alcohol appears to have been a factor. A friend of Luebke's says she arrived at the party "really, really drunk," while her mother says her daughter had a history of binge drinking and had been hospitalized in October with a blood-alcohol level five times the legal driving limit, reports the New York Daily News.

Luebke wrote on her Facebook page in December that she'd quit drinking, and some of her friends said she'd been sober for the past several weeks.

Tributes online mention her as "one of the last people to deserve this," while police advise against ever walking alone in subzero temps. (This woman froze to death in Georgia trying to help her just-out-of-reach husband.)

Parachutist falls to his death in Lake Elsinore May 26, 2013

A 62-year-old skydiver was killed Saturday after he became entangled in a parachute and plummeted into a Lake Elsinore backyard, authorities said.

Ken Oka, of Mira Loma, was performing a maneuver with a group of skydivers shortly after 3 p.m. when he got ensnared in the chute and couldn’t free himself, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Oka landed in the 19000 block of Sweetwood Lane and was pronounced dead at a hospital, the department said.

    LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KTLA) –

He was an experienced  skydiver, with more than 5,000 jumps under his belt, and even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for taking part in the largest aerial group formation in 2003.
Skydiving was his passion, despite a number of hard landings.
“He had broken pretty much everything, but he would get back up and just keep on going,” Oka’s girlfriend and life-partner Lynette Collins said.
Ken left instructions that if he died, he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread across the sky for one last jump, his family said.
Both the sheriff’s department and the Federal Aviation Administration launched inquiries into the accident.

A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend

A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile in front of at least 15 onlookers as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend, police said Sunday.
Northern Territory police said the man was with a group celebrating a birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Darwin, on Saturday when he decided to plunge into the water.
"They were watching him swim across," senior sergeant Geoff Bahnert told AFP of the group.
"And they just saw a crocodile with him in its jaws."
Police conducted a search for the man, but were unsuccessful. The search was continuing Sunday, Bahnert said, adding that the largest crocodile at the site had been shot and killed as a precaution.
Reports suggested the men had ignored warnings not to swim in the river because of the risk of a crocodile attack.
"We tell people to stay away from the water, they obviously went against this (and) a man was taken," an employee of the resort, Erin Bayard, told News Corp Australia.
"We say to everybody it's full of crocs. It's one of the most populated rivers in the Territory, every couple of kilometres there is a large croc."
Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to seven metres (23 feet) long and weigh more than a tonne, are a common feature of Australia's tropical north.
They have been protected since the 1970s and their numbers have increased steadily since, along with the number of human encounters.
In December, a nine-year-old boy was taken by a four-metre crocodile while swimming in the Northern Territory, one month after a seven-year-old girl went missing while swimming, also in the north.

Horror as woman plunges to her death from a Texas roller coaster in front of her young son

    |
A woman has fallen to her death from a roller coaster at the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park in Arlington, Texas.
The accident happened on the ‘Texas Giant’ ride at about 6:45 p.m. on Friday evening.
One witness told The Dallas News that the woman had gotten on the ride with her son and that they believe she mustn’t have been strapped in correctly.

Witnesses who saw the woman tumble from the ride directed paramedics to the victim's location.
'She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled,' said Carmen Brown of Arlington. Brown said she was waiting in line to get on the ride when the accident happened.

According to another witness, children were yelling 'we have to get my mom' when the roller coaster car pulled up at the end of the ride. Riders were hysterical and crying.
People waiting in line for the roller coaster said park employees asked them to get out of line after the accident. The park closed an area of Six Flags around the area of the accident.

Officials at Six Flags have not yet revealed details about the woman's death, but released the following statement: ‘We are deeply saddened to share that earlier this evening an adult woman died in the park while on the Texas Giant.
‘Park medical staff and local paramedics responded immediately. Since the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, the ride has been closed pending further investigation,’ said Sharon Parker, communications manager for Six Flags Over Texas.
'Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time.’
The Texas Giant roller coaster debuted as an all-wooden ride in 1990, and reopened in 2011 redesigned with a steel track during the theme park's 50th anniversary. The ride's tallest height is 153 feet and has a drop of 147 feet.
This is the park’s second fatality. In 1999, a 28-year-old Arkansas woman died and 10 others were injured when a boat capsized on the Roaring Rapids ride.
In 2006, nine park patrons were injured on the Texas Tornado when one of the mechanical bearings that spins the ride malfunctioned.

USC student dies in fall from Cabo San Lucas hotel balcony during trip to Mexico

Samuel Levine, 22, fell to his death while on spring break in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Levine, a psychology major and member of Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Southern California, was set to graduate in June.

"Authorities in Mexico say Levine appears to have been trying to get into a hotel room by climbing outside a restricted area and onto an air conditioning unit.

The fiber glass surrounding that unit couldn't hold his weight, and he fell six floors to his death.

Mexican police said he died of severe head trauma.

Investigators say Levine had alcohol in his system, and his friends confirmed that he had been drinking before the deadly fall."

Florida man swallowed by a sinkhole Seffner Video

Florida officials said Saturday evening they hadn't found the body of the man swallowed by a sinkhole two days earlier, and planned to stop looking.
A somber-faced county administrator told reporters in Seffner, Fla., that the now-60-foot-deep sinkhole, which forced other families in the Tampa-area neighborhood to evacuate, was simply too deep and too dangerous for efforts to continue.
"At this point it's really not possible to recover the body," Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said after extending his condolences to the family of 37-year-old Jeff Bush.
Even before officials called off the rescue efforts, Bush's brother Jeremy had begun to have a painful realization: The last thing he would ever hear from his brother were screams — and the muffled cries for help that came from the chasm that claimed him.
"I really don't think they are going to be able to find him," Jeremy told Reuters on Saturday. He "will be there forever."
Jeremy told reporters he woke up Thursday night to something that sounded like a car crash. Then came a scream. By the time he got to his brother's room, the sinkhole had already swallowed Jeff's bed and dresser. Jeremy jumped into the giant opening.
"The hole was still caving in, but I didn't care," he said. "I just wanted my brother, man."

Woman Rose Mancos Killed Trying to Retrieve her Purse that fell on the Train Tracks New York City Subway

Woman killed by subway train trying to retrieve her purse.

A woman was crushed to death by an oncoming subway train at the 77th Street Station in Manhattan this afternoon after she jumped on the tracks to retrieve her dropped purse, police said. The horrific incident occurred on the crowded northbound platform shortly before 4 p.m. when the woman, described by police as 48-years-old, somehow ended up on the tracks as a train barreled towards her.

Can you only imagine the feeling this woman was feeling at that very moment as the train is approaching…? But what to do as the train comes closer and closer?

As the No. 6 train headed towards the woman, onlookers screamed to her to lie down between the tracks.

    The fear, the desperation…

The motorman sounded his horn eight times to warn her, witnesses said.

    The confusion, the terror…

Other witnesses said it appeared that she was trying to climb back up..

What to do? the train getting closer…

The woman then pressed herself against the platform wall — which only provides several inches of space between the wall and the train

And that’s when her life ended. And then the real pandemonium ensued:

“All I saw was her head sticking out. She was stuck where the door is,” she said. It was chaos on the platform as straphangers shrieked with horror upon seeing the shredded parts of her body, witnesses said.

Why don’t people just pay attention? Is it ever really worth to put yourself in such a risk. Oh the horror…

The woman, Rose M. Mankos, was a lawyer who had previously worked for the state, the authorities

Police Identify Woman Killed by Subway Train

By AL BAKER and CARA BUCKLEY

    Updated, 2:57 p.m.
The 48-year-old woman who was crushed to death by a subway train on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Thursday afternoon has been identified as Rose M. Mankos, the authorities said. She was a lawyer who had previously worked for the state.

Ms. Mankos, who was dressed in athletic-style clothing, jumped into the track bed at East 77th Street and Lexington Avenue at about 3:45 p.m. to retrieve her black-and-gray nylon shoulder bag, which had fallen there.

But witnesses said a northbound No. 6 train bore down on her and struck her before she could hoist herself back onto the platform.

When emergency responders found her, Ms. Mankos had severe injuries to her face and skull, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identification was later discovered inside her bag, which was found lying in the track bed, and the police notified her brother, Joseph.

Also in the bag was “gym clothing and deodorant,” said a law enforcement official.

Ms. Mankos lived at 250 First Avenue, just north of East 14th Street, in Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan. She was a former senior court analyst at the state office court administration’s Division of Continuing Legal Education, last working there in February 2008. She graduated from New York University Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 2001.

Reached at his home in North Bergen, N.J., Ms. Mankos’s 82-year-old father, Robert Mankos, said Friday that he hardly begun to process his daughter’s death, and that he had already felt stretched past his limit from caring for his wife, who has Parkinson’s disease and diabetes.

“I felt like 60 before, I feel like 105 now,” he said.

Rose Mankos lived by herself and had never married, but loved cats. She often visited her mother at a nursing home in New Jersey, Mr. Mankos said.

He said he had not seen much of his daughter lately. When the medical examiner called, asking him to come to the city to identify Ms. Mankos’s body, he realized he could not bear the ordeal. “It’s too much,” he said

Instead his son, who had traveled from Pittsburgh, was on his way Friday to identify the body.

Mr. Mankos could not fathom why his daughter jumped onto the subway tracks. “I guess she dropped her purse,” he said, “Except you never do that, never.”

The family was planning a small private service in the coming days.

“It’s too late now,” Mr. Mankos said. “I’ll be praying for the rest of my life, until I die.”
