Phillips and an emergency medical technician onboard laid the woman down and immediately began administering CPR, while the pilot urged everyone to brace for an emergency landing.

The pilot was forced to land the Boeing 737 at Philadelphia International Airport. The flight, which was en route to Texas' Dallas Love Field Airport, was carrying 144 passengers and five crew members at the time, officials said.

A woman died after a Southwest Airlines jet suffered engine failure and made an emergency landing on Tuesday, marking the first accidental fatality on a domestic flight in nine years, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Flight 1380 was en route from New York City's LaGuardia International Airport to Dallas Love Field when the plane was forced to land at Philadelphia International Airport Tuesday morning.

Jennifer Riordan of New Mexico died after she was partially sucked out a window near the engine, according to witnesses. Officials did not immediately confirm that account.

"Jennifer Riordan has passed away as a result of previously reported events on Southwest Airlines flight No. 1380," her family said in a statement. "Jennifer’s vibrancy, passion and love infused our community and reached across our country. Her impact on everything and everyone she touched can never be fully measured.

"But foremost, she is the bedrock of our family. She and Mike wrote a love story unlike any other. Her beauty and love is evident through her children. We are so appreciative of the outpouring of support from family, friends and our community."

Riordan previously worked in marketing at the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center.

"Jennifer was an amazing community leader, team member, wife and mother," Dr. Paul Roth, chancellor for Health Sciences Center, said in a statement. "Her passion for our community, our students and our future was unwavering. We are committed to carrying on her work to ensure quality education and career opportunities to New Mexico’s youth. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family during this difficult time. She will be forever missed by her Lobo family."

A Maryland woman has been killed in Virginia after a 12-year-old boy threw himself off an overpass and landed on her vehicle on Saturday afternoon.

Marisa Harris, 22, of Olney, was driving under the Cedar Lane overpass on Interstate 66 when the boy - who is not being named - landed on her Ford Escape.

Harris was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders - while the boy, extraordinarily, survived, NBC Washington reported. 

The crash occurred at 4.18pm near Exit 62 in Fairfax County as Harris was driving Eastbound, according to local authorities.

It's not yet clear what compelled the boy to make the 30-foot drop.

Police are not naming the jumper as he is a child, but he was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries, WTOP reported.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, a man in Harris' front passenger seat was able to stop the car on the left shoulder.

He was uninjured, police said. It was initially reported that the jumper and Harris were both men.

It's unclear why Harris was in Virginia at the time. 

Between 1999 and 2015, 711 children aged 12 killed themselves in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Study and Control.

Of them, 507 were male and 204 female; the lowest rates were in 2007 and 2008, when 25 children committed suicide each year; by 2014 and 2015 that had risen to 68 and 56, respectively.

Alabama state troopers say alcohol is a factor in the crash that killed 50-year-old Jeffrey Morris Brasher and 22-year-old Austin Blaine Brasher. They both lived in Bankston, about 67 miles west of Birmingham.

roopers say the crash occurred around 4.10am on Saturday on Fayette County 49, one mile west of Winfield, when the 2006 Ford pickup the elder Brasher was driving collided with his son's 2004 Chevrolet. 

Neither man was wearing a seatbelt, Al.com reported. 

Jeffrey Brasher was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin Brasher was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he died at 9.18am.

Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

One family member, Jennifer Brasher, took to Facebook to express her distress at the death's of Jeffrey and Austin.

Posting a link to her timeline, she asked 'Can this all be just a dream?'.

When 21-year-old Elizabeth Luebke traveled an hour and a half south from her home in Oshkosh, Wis., to Milwaukee for a concert, she wound up at an after-party wearing a tank top, shorts, and fish-net stockings — and at around 4:30 a.m. left angrily after arguing with a friend, reports Fox6now.com. It was -5.8 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind chill was a frigid -27.5 degrees.

Security video footage from a nearby business shows her suddenly collapsing in front of a house and eventually stopping moving altogether, reports BuzzFeed. Her body was found by a passerby at 9 a.m., just around the corner from the party.

Luebke, who also went by the name Lana Kane, had frozen to death, but alcohol appears to have been a factor. A friend of Luebke's says she arrived at the party "really, really drunk," while her mother says her daughter had a history of binge drinking and had been hospitalized in October with a blood-alcohol level five times the legal driving limit, reports the New York Daily News.

Luebke wrote on her Facebook page in December that she'd quit drinking, and some of her friends said she'd been sober for the past several weeks.

Tributes online mention her as "one of the last people to deserve this," while police advise against ever walking alone in subzero temps. (This woman froze to death in Georgia trying to help her just-out-of-reach husband.)

Parachutist falls to his death in Lake Elsinore May 26, 2013

A 62-year-old skydiver was killed Saturday after he became entangled in a parachute and plummeted into a Lake Elsinore backyard, authorities said.

Ken Oka, of Mira Loma, was performing a maneuver with a group of skydivers shortly after 3 p.m. when he got ensnared in the chute and couldn’t free himself, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Oka landed in the 19000 block of Sweetwood Lane and was pronounced dead at a hospital, the department said.

He was an experienced  skydiver, with more than 5,000 jumps under his belt, and even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for taking part in the largest aerial group formation in 2003.
Skydiving was his passion, despite a number of hard landings.
“He had broken pretty much everything, but he would get back up and just keep on going,” Oka’s girlfriend and life-partner Lynette Collins said.
Ken left instructions that if he died, he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread across the sky for one last jump, his family said.
Both the sheriff’s department and the Federal Aviation Administration launched inquiries into the accident.
